Bamboo can grow 1 metre in just 3 days, making it a sustainable building material. Malaysians have been using it to build kampung houses for years.
But what about using bamboo to build something that defies old conventions; a structure that is comfortable, even luxurious? That’s what Elora Hardy and her team at “Ibuku” in Bali did.
Using bamboo as the primary building material, Ibuku has created over 50 unique structures. One of these structures is a six-storey home that features big curving roofs, a bridge to the front door, and even a private TV room.
In her recent TED Talk, Elora explains her team’s use of bamboo designs:
“To reap the selective benefits and work within the constraints of this material, we have really had to push ourselves, and within that constraint, we have found space for something new”
