To celebrate Merdeka Day, we thought we’d share some stories of ordinary Malaysians who are making a difference to society. Their acts of kindness, heroism and compassion is what defines our nation, more than race or politics, and we salute each and every one of them.

1. Kindness Malaysia regularly holds a “Pasar Percuma” (Free Market) for the needy. The only payment required is a smile.
2. Anjung Singgah provides free accommodation for the homeless to get them back on their feet.
3. A Malaysian inventor created a mobile shower for the homeless, which can be assembled in 10 minutes.
4. Every Saturday, Dr. Shanmugam Madhusudhan a.k.a The ‘Teddy Bear Doctor’ provides free medical check ups for the poor in KL.
5. The Mustard Seed Soup Kitchen provides a bubble foot spa session for the homeless to celebrate Mother’s Day.
6. Hairstylist Azmina Burhan gives free haircuts to the homeless every two months to give them back their self-confidence.
7. Lance Corporal Munir Mansor crawled in a drain the length of an Olympic swimming pool to rescue a kitten.
8. Rayyan Haries travelled from Subang Jaya to Greece to be a volunteer cook for Syrian refugees.
9. He also went to Philippines to provide relief after Typhoon Haiyan hit the country.
10. Anis Mohd Taufik rescued an injured dog in the middle of a busy road in Teluk Panglima Garang.
11. Malay fireman Mohd Fariszuan Jumaat talked a man out of suicide, in Mandarin.
12. Volunteers teach a group of mothers in Chow Kit various crafting skills to help them earn a living. The group, and the products they make are now known as #UmieAktif
13. UKM students created the “Food For Mahasiswa” program to provide free dinners to students in financial difficulties.
14. Malay teenager fasting during Ramadhan feeds a handicapped Chinese man in Kuching.
15. Kuan Chee Heng is an ex-cop from Puchong. During Ramadhan, he made sure a needy Malay family of 8 were able to break their fast.
