In 2013, one photo catapulted baker Ryan Loh to stardom. And a regular gig with the Johor royal family.
One day in 2013, a customer entered the bakery where Ryan Loh was working, and asked the Johor-based chef to create a custom birthday cake design for His Royal Highness The Sultan of Johor.
Taking up the job, he decided to make a cake in the shape of Johor state, with the red and blue colours of the flag.
Thinking that was the job done, he moved on to other projects. But he didn’t realise what an impact that cake would have on his life.

When His Royal Highness The Sultan of Johor posted a photo with the cake, Chef Ryan’s relationship with the royal family began.
Chef Ryan has been baking cakes for the Johor royal family every since. In 2015, he created a birthday cake design in the shape of the Sultan’s Mack truck for His Highness’ birthday celebration.
The one-of-a-kind truck is the most expensive in the world (beating the previous record of RM1.5 million). The cake was probably not cheap also 🙂
In 2016, he designed a cake replica of a train for the Sultan
As well as a replica of the Sultan’s Boeing 737 in gold and blue
He also made the birthday cake for Johor princess Tunku Tun Aminah
His most impressive work for the royal family to date is a birthday cake design for HRH The Crown Prince of Johor, based on the Johor Southern Tigers Football Club
The cake is 1.8 m tall and weighs 40kg!
When he’s not baking for the Royal Family, he is busy creating other designs
Sadly, Chef Ryan is not a Recommend.my baker (although we have invited him!)
But if you ever need a custom cake design for your own “royal” event, we will be happy to match your requirements with one of our hundreds of recommended bakers.
