Every home in Malaysia uses concrete is some form. It’s the most popular building for support foundations and columns due to its strength under compression, and is also popular in industrial home designs that feature concrete bathtubs, sinks, and bar concrete walls.
But concrete is also vulnerable to cracks. If left alone, water can penetrate the small cracks in concrete and compromise structural integrity.
In a recent CNN report, scientists in the Netherlands have found a way to make concrete “self-repairing” so that any cracks that appear will automatically fill themselves up.
The magic ingredient? Bacteria.
The team incorporated a species of bacteria into the concrete mix. When exposed to water through cracks, the bacteria will create limestone that fill up the cracks.
